Which Paint System Suits Your Concrete Pool?
Concrete tells us what your pool is made from. If it has already been painted, the existing coating tells us what can safely go over it. Select the description that matches your pool before choosing paint.
Bare or unpainted concrete
Luxapool® Epoxy may be suitable as part of the specified system for new or uncoated concrete. Correct concrete curing, preparation and primer/sealer requirements must be completed before the finish coats.
Previously painted with epoxy
A sound existing epoxy coating may be recoated with Luxapool® Epoxy after the required inspection and surface preparation. Loose, flaking or contaminated paint must be addressed first.
Previously painted with chlorinated rubber
Do not apply Luxapool® Epoxy or Epoxy Primer directly over chlorinated rubber. Choose the compatible chlorinated-rubber system or ask PPO for advice before purchasing.

Choosing Concrete Pool Paint Starts Below the Surface
Faded colour, staining and a worn finish can make a concrete pool look ready for a straightforward repaint. But a successful coating starts with more than choosing a colour.
The pool must be structurally sound, clean, dry and prepared for the selected system. Existing paint must be identified and checked for adhesion. Bare or porous concrete may need the specified primer/sealer. Cracks, contamination, moisture and loose coating need to be dealt with before the finish coats are applied.
These steps take planning, but they help reduce avoidable problems such as poor adhesion, uneven coverage or selecting a coating that is incompatible with what is already on the pool.
Concrete is the substrate. The existing paint—if there is one—determines the compatible repaint system.
The Recommended System for Suitable Concrete Pools
Once the pool is confirmed as bare concrete or coated with sound existing epoxy, PPO recommends Luxapool® Epoxy as the appropriate paint system. It is a two-component, high-build coating designed for wet and underwater applications.It forms a durable, glossy and chemical-resistant finish for properly prepared swimming-pool surfaces, including suitable concrete.
It may be used for new or uncoated concrete as part of the specified primer and coating system. It may also suit a concrete pool already painted with sound epoxy, provided the existing coating is confirmed and prepared according to the current Luxapool® instructions.

Choose the Correct Concrete Pool-Paint System
For new or uncoated concrete
Start with the current Luxapool® preparation guide and specified Epoxy Primer Sealer. The primer is designed to seal porous concrete and promote adhesion before the finish coats. Confirm concrete cure, dryness and coat requirements before ordering.
For sound existing epoxy
Confirm that the old coating is epoxy and remains sound. Complete the required cleaning, repair and abrasion steps before applying the Luxapool® Epoxy repaint coats.
For chlorinated rubber or an unknown coating
Do not cover chlorinated rubber with epoxy. Choose the compatible chlorinated-rubber system or ask PPO for guidance if the coating cannot be identified.

Coverage varies with the surface and application. Rough, porous or uneven concrete may require more material than a smooth, previously coated surface, so contact PPO if your result is close to a full-kit boundary or the pool has an unusual shape.
How to Plan a Concrete Pool Repaint
1. Identify the existing surface and coating
Confirm the pool is concrete and determine whether it is bare, epoxy-painted, chlorinated-rubber-painted or unknown.
2. Select the compatible system
Match the primer and finish coats to the pool’s actual condition. Ask PPO before buying if the coating history or surface is unclear.
3. Estimate the required quantity
Use the Pool Paint Calculator, then review the estimate against the required number of coats and the condition of the concrete.
4. Prepare and repair the pool
Drain and inspect the pool. Clean away oils, algae, salts and other contamination. Repair defects, remove unsound material, and etch or abrade the surface as the current guide requires. Let the prepared surface dry fully.
5. Mix and apply the coating
Follow the current Luxapool® instructions for mixing ratio, induction time, pot life, weather, coat thickness and recoat timing. Only mix what can be applied within the stated pot life.
6. Cure fully before refilling
Do not refill early. Follow the current technical data for the selected hardener, temperature and project conditions.

What paint should I use inside a concrete swimming pool?
Use a coating designed for immersed pool surfaces. Luxapool® Epoxy may suit properly prepared bare concrete or a concrete pool with a sound existing epoxy coating. Ordinary concrete or paving paint is not a substitute for an immersed pool coating.
Can I paint epoxy over old pool paint?
Only if the old coating is compatible and sound. Epoxy may be used over a confirmed existing epoxy coating after the specified preparation. It must not be applied directly over chlorinated rubber.
Do I need primer on concrete?
New or bare concrete generally requires the specified Luxapool® Epoxy Primer Sealer. Previously epoxy-painted pools require a different preparation process. Always follow the current guide for your pool’s condition.
How much epoxy paint will I need?
Use PPO’s Pool Paint Calculator for an approximate estimate. Quantity depends on pool dimensions, number of coats, surface texture, porosity and application.
Can I apply Luxapool® Epoxy myself?
The coating can be applied by roller or brush, but correct preparation, mixing, timing, weather and curing are essential. If you cannot confidently complete the full process, consider using an experienced applicator.
How long can the finish last?
Current Luxapool® technical data states up to 10 years for domestic pools. Actual service life depends on the surface, preparation, application, curing, use, colour and pool-water maintenance. This is not an unconditional guarantee.
How soon can I refill the pool?
Refill only after the coating has fully cured. Current technical data lists 96 hours at 25°C, but the required period can change with conditions. Follow the current product data and project-specific instructions.
Can I use this on a concrete pool deck or coping?
