Which Paint Does Your Pebblecrete Pool Need?
Pebblecrete is a textured concrete-based pool surface. The existing coating, if any, determines which product can be applied over it.
Stable, unpainted Pebblecrete
Sound existing epoxy
Sound existing chlorinated rubber
Previously painted but coating is unknown
Loose pebbles, hollow areas or major cracking
Luxapool® Epoxy Pool Paint
Luxapool® Epoxy is a high-solids, two-component coating that creates a hard, smooth and glossy immersed finish.
For stable, unpainted Pebblecrete, apply the specified primer to the properly prepared surface before applying the required Luxapool® Epoxy topcoats. Sound existing epoxy should be thoroughly cleaned, repaired and abraded before recoating.
Product details
Standard and designer colours available
Hard, glossy immersed finish
Suitable for saltwater and chlorinated pools
Two-component coating supplied as Part A and Part B
Designed for longer-term pool coating performance
Pebblecrete coverage
The textured profile of Pebblecrete uses more paint than a smooth surface.
Allow approximately 10–13m² per 3.5L Epoxy kit, per coat on Pebblecrete. Approximately three coats may be required to achieve complete coverage and the specified film thickness.
Luxapool® Epoxy Primer Sealer has a general coverage rate of approximately 25–30m² per 4L kit for one coat, but actual coverage may be lower on rough or porous Pebblecrete.
Use the calculator as a planning estimate and allow for the pool’s texture, condition and expected wastage.

Luxapool® Chlorinated Rubber Pool Paint
Luxapool® Chlorinated Rubber is a single-pack coating that creates a hard satin finish. It is the correct repaint option when a sound Pebblecrete pool is already coated with chlorinated rubber.
It may also be used on stable, unpainted concrete-based surfaces where the specified Chlorinated Rubber preparation can be completed.
Product details
Single-pack coating with no separate hardener
Hard satin finish
Suitable for saltwater and chlorinated pools
Resistant to common pool chemicals and algae growth
Three to four thin coats required
Available in selected pool colours
Coverage
Apply Luxapool® Chlorinated Rubber at approximately 7–9m² per litre, per coat.
A 4L can therefore covers approximately 28–36m² per coat on a smooth surface. Pebblecrete texture and porosity can reduce coverage, so allow additional paint rather than relying on the maximum spread rate.

Is Your Pebblecrete Ready to Paint?
Painting is suitable only when the Pebblecrete is stable and firmly bonded.
Before ordering, check that:
There are no widespread hollow areas
Loose pebbles and weak material have been removed
Major cracks and leaks have been repaired
The surface can be thoroughly cleaned
Previous paint is sound and firmly attached
The existing coating has been identified
The pool can be allowed to dry completely
Suitable weather is available for application and curing
How to Prepare a Pebblecrete Pool
The exact preparation depends on whether the Pebblecrete is unpainted, coated with epoxy or coated with chlorinated rubber.
Inspect the surface
Check for loose pebbles, hollow areas, cracking, leaks and previous repairs. Remove weak material and complete all necessary repairs before painting.
Identify the existing coating
If the pool has been painted before, establish whether the coating is epoxy or chlorinated rubber. Test several areas if the coating history is unknown.
Clean the entire pool
Remove grease, sunscreen residue, oils, algae and other contaminants using the cleaning method specified in the relevant application guide.
Prepare the surface
Unpainted Pebblecrete must be cleaned and prepared according to the selected coating system. Sound existing paint must be thoroughly abraded to create a mechanical key for the new compatible coating.
Prime where specified
For the Luxapool® Epoxy system, apply the specified primer to stable, unpainted Pebblecrete before the epoxy topcoats.
Previously epoxy-painted pools do not normally require the same full primer coat when the existing epoxy is sound and correctly prepared.
Apply the selected coating
Follow the required spreading rate, coat thickness, recoating intervals and weather conditions for the chosen product. Avoid overspreading the coating on the textured surface.
Allow the complete curing period
Allow at least 10 days in summer and 14 days in winter before refilling the pool. Filling prematurely can damage the coating’s colour and appearance.
How Much Pebblecrete Pool Paint Will You Need?
Pebblecrete normally requires more paint than smooth concrete because the coating must cover the raised aggregate and recessed areas.
The required quantity depends on:
For Luxapool® Epoxy, allow approximately 10–13m² per 3.5L kit, per coat on Pebblecrete.
For Luxapool® Chlorinated Rubber, the standard spread rate is 7–9m² per litre, per coat, but rough Pebblecrete may cover less.
Do not rely only on the maximum coverage rate. It is better to allow for the complete project than to run short during application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Pebblecrete pools be painted?
Yes. Stable, firmly bonded Pebblecrete can be coated after the surface has been properly cleaned, repaired and prepared for the selected Luxapool® system.
Which paint is best for a Pebblecrete pool?
The existing coating is the first consideration. Sound existing epoxy should be recoated with Luxapool® Epoxy, while sound existing chlorinated rubber should be recoated with Luxapool® Chlorinated Rubber. Both systems can be considered for suitable unpainted Pebblecrete using their specified preparation requirements.
Does Pebblecrete need primer before epoxy?
Yes. Stable, unpainted Pebblecrete requires the specified primer before the Luxapool® Epoxy topcoats. Sound existing epoxy is cleaned, repaired and abraded before compatible recoating.
Can epoxy be applied over chlorinated rubber?
No. Luxapool® Epoxy must not be applied directly over chlorinated rubber. If the existing coating cannot be identified, contact PPO before ordering.
How many coats does Pebblecrete need?
Luxapool® Epoxy may require approximately three coats on Pebblecrete to achieve complete coverage and the specified film thickness. Luxapool® Chlorinated Rubber requires three to four thin coats. Follow the current guide for the selected system.
Why does Pebblecrete use more paint?
Pebblecrete has a deeper and rougher surface profile than smooth render or fibreglass. Paint must cover the raised aggregate and recessed spaces, reducing the area covered by each pack.
Will pool paint repair loose Pebblecrete?
No. Loose pebbles, hollow areas, cracks and structural problems must be repaired before painting. Pool paint provides a finished coating but does not stabilise a failing substrate.
How long before the pool can be refilled?
Allow a minimum of 10 days in summer and 14 days in winter before refilling. Premature filling can cause cloudy or uneven colour and damage the appearance of the final coating.
Is painting a Pebblecrete pool suitable for DIY application?
It can be suitable when the Pebblecrete is sound and the applicator can complete the required inspection, repairs, cleaning, preparation, coating and curing steps. Rough surfaces require careful application and additional allowance for paint quantity.
Ready to Refresh Your Pebblecrete Pool?
Start by identifying the existing coating and checking that the Pebblecrete is stable. Then calculate the approximate quantity and order the compatible Luxapool® system.
