Understanding Pool Paint Compatibility Before Recoating

One of the biggest causes of pool paint failure is applying the wrong coating over an existing surface. Peeling, blistering and poor adhesion can usually be traced back to a compatibility mistake made before the first coat went on.

The good news is that the rule is simple, and you can test for it yourself in about a minute.

The Rule

Epoxy goes over epoxy. Chlorinated rubber goes over chlorinated rubber. Epoxy will not adhere over chlorinated rubber.

If your pool is currently coated in rubber and you want epoxy, the rubber has to come off completely first. If you’re recoating like with like and the existing surface is sound, you can go over it with proper preparation.

How to Test What’s On Your Pool

Colormaker’s method needs a clean rag and some acetone or Chlorinated Rubber Solvent. Rub the existing surface firmly for about a minute.

• Softens and goes sticky — chlorinated rubber
• Stays firm, though surface oxide may lift — epoxy

Test in several places. Older pools are often a patchwork of systems applied over decades, and one clean test on one wall doesn’t tell you about the rest.

Epoxy and Chlorinated Rubber — The Difference

Both cure to a hard, glossy finish. Despite the name, chlorinated rubber is not rubbery or flexible — that’s a common misconception.

Bare and Uncoated Surfaces

New concrete, render, marblesheen and quartzon all need Luxapool® Epoxy Primer Sealer before the top coats — roughly 4 kits alongside 8 kits of topcoat on a standard 10m × 5m pool. Fibreglass doesn’t need primer; abrasion provides the key.

Recoating Over Sound Epoxy

No primer needed — but it is not “wash and paint”. Colormaker require the entire existing epoxy surface abraded with 20–40 grit until the whole pool has a sandpaper feel. That roughened surface is what the new coat keys into. A light scuff in patches, or water blasting, is not enough, and incomplete abrasion is the most common reason a recoat peels.

Then vacuum, hose off the dust, dry, and topcoat.

What Incompatible Coatings Look Like When They Fail

Failure isn’t always immediate. A mismatched system can look fine for months before problems appear:

• Peeling between coating layers
• Bubbling or blistering
• Uneven curing or soft spots
• Early surface breakdown

Correcting it usually means stripping the lot and starting again — which is why the one-minute solvent test is worth doing.

Preparation Matters As Much As Compatibility

A compatible coating over poor preparation will still fail. Wash the surface, remove unstable paint, abrade or etch as the surface requires, repair cracks with Structural Epoxy Filler, and make sure the substrate is completely dry — moisture content below 5%.

No hygrometer? Tape a square of black plastic to the pool floor in the morning. Droplets underneath by mid-afternoon mean it’s too wet to paint.
