Can Your Fibreglass Pool Be Painted?
Fibreglass pools can be refreshed with Luxapool® Epoxy when the surface is sound and the coating will remain below the waterline.
Before proceeding, check that:
The fibreglass is firmly bonded and structurally sound
The pool has no unresolved leaks, cracking or delamination
Blisters and damaged areas can be repaired before painting
The gelcoat can be completely cleaned and abraded
The surface can be allowed to dry fully
The coating will be used on immersed areas below the waterline
Luxapool® Epoxy Pool Paint
Luxapool® Epoxy is a high-solids, two-component coating designed for wet and underwater applications. It forms a hard, smooth and glossy finish that resists saltwater, chlorinated water, common pool chemicals and algae growth.
For sound fibreglass below the waterline, thoroughly clean and abrade the gelcoat to a uniformly dull finish before applying Luxapool® Epoxy according to the fibreglass guide.

Before Painting a Previously Coated Fibreglass Pool
If the fibreglass pool has been painted before, identify the existing coating before purchasing new paint.
Sound existing epoxy
Clean, abrade and recoat with Luxapool® Epoxy according to the relevant guide.
Chlorinated rubber or an unknown coating
Contact PPO before ordering. Do not apply epoxy directly over chlorinated rubber.
Loose or failing coating
Remove the unsound material and assess the underlying fibreglass before repainting.
How to Paint a Fibreglass Pool
Correct preparation is essential. Epoxy will not adhere reliably to glossy, contaminated or inadequately abraded gelcoat.
Inspect the fibreglass
Check the surface for blisters, cracking, raised areas, delamination, leaks and other damage. Repair all defects before final sanding.
Clean the pool completely
Remove dirt, oils, sunscreen residue, algae and other contaminants using the cleaning method specified in the fibreglass application guide.
Abrade the gelcoat
Sand the entire surface until it has a uniformly dull, sandpaper-like finish. Glossy sections must not remain.
Remove dust and allow the surface to dry
Thoroughly remove all sanding residue and confirm that the fibreglass is completely dry before painting.
Mix and apply the epoxy
Mix the complete Part A and Part B pack as directed. Apply at least two coats at the specified coverage and observe the required recoating periods.
Allow the full curing period
Allow a minimum of 10 days in summer and 14 days in winter before refilling the pool. Filling prematurely can affect the colour and damage the finish.
How Much Fibreglass Pool Paint Will You Need?
A 3.5L kit of Luxapool® Epoxy covers approximately 20–25m² per coat.
A minimum of two coats is required. Some fibreglass pools may require three coats to achieve the specified total film thickness.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a fibreglass swimming pool be painted?
Yes. A sound fibreglass pool can be coated with Luxapool® Epoxy after the surface has been completely cleaned, repaired, abraded and dried.
Can I paint directly over the existing gelcoat?
The gelcoat must first be thoroughly cleaned and abraded to a uniformly dull, sandpaper-like finish. Epoxy should not be applied over glossy or inadequately prepared gelcoat.
Do I need to repair blisters before painting?
Yes. Repair blisters, raised areas, cracks and damaged fibreglass before completing the final sanding and painting.
Will epoxy paint repair a leaking fibreglass pool?
No. Pool paint provides a finished coating but is not a structural repair membrane. Repair leaks and damaged fibreglass before painting.
Can Luxapool® Epoxy be used above the waterline?
No. The fibreglass application guide states that Luxapool® Epoxy is not designed for fibreglass exposed above the waterline or to direct sunlight. Ask PPO about the appropriate coating for exposed areas.
Can epoxy be applied over chlorinated rubber?
No. Luxapool® Epoxy must not be applied directly over chlorinated rubber. Contact PPO before purchasing if the existing coating is unknown.
