Choosing between epoxy and chlorinated rubber is not simply a matter of deciding which finish looks better or which product is easier to apply.

What is Luxapool® Epoxy Pool Paint?
Luxapool® Epoxy is a high-solids, two-component pool coating designed for properly prepared immersed surfaces.
It forms a hard, smooth and glossy finish with resistance to saltwater, chlorinated water, pool chemicals and algae growth.
Epoxy may be right for your pool when:
The pool is fibreglass
The surface is pebblecrete or marblesheen
The existing coating is sound epoxy
The pool is new or uncoated concrete
A longer-lasting coating is a priority

Important application considerations
Epoxy requires the correct preparation for the individual surface. Its Part A and Part B components must be thoroughly mixed and complete packs should be used.
Primer requirements also depend on the substrate. Pebblecrete, marblesheen and some uncoated concrete surfaces require the specified primer-sealer.
What is Luxapool® Chlorinated Rubber Pool Paint?
Luxapool® Chlorinated Rubber is a single-pack coating formulated for new or old concrete pools and sound existing chlorinated-rubber finishes.

The existing coating is confirmed as chlorinated rubber
The pool is new or uncoated concrete
A single-pack system is preferred

Important compatibility limitations
Chlorinated rubber must not be applied over epoxy. It is also not the manufacturer-approved coating for fibreglass, pebblecrete or marblesheen.
Despite its name, chlorinated rubber pool paint should not be described as soft, rubbery or highly flexible. The cured coating forms a hard pool finish.
Which is better for an uncoated concrete pool?
Uncoated concrete is the main surface where either coating may be technically suitable.

If you do not know whether the existing paint is epoxy or chlorinated rubber, perform a compatibility test before purchasing.
Basic acetone test
Select several clean, dry areas of the pool.
Place acetone on a clean rag.
Rub the existing coating for approximately 30 seconds.
Check whether the coating becomes soft or sticky.
It is likely chlorinated rubber. Do not apply epoxy directly over it.
It may be epoxy or another coating. Confirm the result before proceeding.
The pool may contain multiple coating layers. Contact PPO before buying.
Preparation matters with both systems
Neither coating can compensate for a weak, damp, dirty or structurally damaged surface.
Before painting:
Identify the substrate and existing coating
Remove contaminants and loose material
Repair cracks, leaks and surface damage
Complete the specified abrasion or acid etching
Use the correct primer where required
Confirm the surface is fully dry
Check the weather and application conditions
Follow the required coating and curing intervals
How much paint will you need?
Coverage and coat requirements differ between the two systems:
Luxapool® Epoxy: Approximately 20–25m² per 3.5L kit, per coat
Luxapool® Chlorinated Rubber: Check the current product and application guide for the specified coverage and number of coats
The quantity also depends on the pool’s shape, surface texture, condition, preparation and expected wastage.
Frequently asked questions
Is epoxy better than chlorinated rubber pool paint?
Epoxy generally provides a thicker finish and longer expected coating life. That does not make it the correct choice for every pool. A pool already painted with chlorinated rubber must continue with the compatible chlorinated-rubber system unless the previous coating is completely removed and the manufacturer approves the new specification.
Can epoxy be applied over chlorinated rubber?
No. Luxapool® Epoxy must not be applied directly over chlorinated rubber.
Can chlorinated rubber be applied over epoxy?
No. An existing sound epoxy coating must be recoated with compatible epoxy.
Can both coatings be used on bare concrete?
Yes. Luxapool’s compatibility guidance permits both epoxy and chlorinated rubber on properly prepared uncoated concrete. The preparation and coating requirements are different.
Can chlorinated rubber be used on fibreglass?
No. Luxapool® Epoxy is the compatible system for fibreglass pools.
Can chlorinated rubber be used on pebblecrete?
No. Current Luxapool guidance specifies epoxy and the appropriate primer system for pebblecrete.
Is chlorinated rubber paint flexible?
It should not be treated as a flexible waterproof membrane. Luxapool describes the cured coating as a hard pool finish.
Which coating is easier to apply?
Chlorinated rubber is a single-pack product, while epoxy requires accurate mixing of two components. Both still require thorough surface preparation, suitable weather and correct curing.
Which coating lasts longer?
Luxapool advises approximately 8–10 years for epoxy and up to approximately three years for chlorinated rubber when preparation, application and water chemistry are correctly managed. Every pool is unique, and actual results vary.
What if I cannot identify the old paint?
Do not guess. Test several sections or send PPO photographs and any available coating history before ordering.
