Summer Pool Maintenance: How to Keep Your Paint Looking Fresh

Beat the Summer Heat — and Keep Your Pool Looking Stunning
As Aussie summers heat up, your pool becomes the heart of backyard life. But while long days and clear skies make for perfect swimming weather, they can also take a toll on your pool’s surface.
If you’ve recently painted your pool or want to extend the life of your existing finish, proper summer maintenance is key to keeping that brilliant colour and smooth surface looking fresh all season long.
1. Maintain Perfect Water Balance
Your pool’s chemical balance plays a huge role in how long your paint lasts.
Unbalanced water can cause chalking, fading, or even blistering of your paint — especially during the hotter months when evaporation rates are higher.
Aim to test and balance your pool water at least twice a week during summer. Keep pH levels between 7.2 and 7.8 and chlorine within recommended limits. Consistent water balance helps prevent chemical damage to your painted surface and keeps your water sparkling clear.
2. Brush Regularly to Prevent Algae Build-Up
Even with proper chemistry, algae can start forming in corners, steps, or shaded areas. Lightly brushing your pool walls and floor once or twice a week helps stop algae before it stains or dulls your paint.
This is particularly important for painted surfaces, as early algae growth can cling to microscopic pores and create a faded, uneven look.
3. Keep an Eye on Sun and Temperature
Australia’s harsh UV rays can gradually affect any pool coating. Luckily, Luxapool® Epoxy Pool Paint is specifically designed for our conditions, offering excellent UV stability and long-term colour retention.

For older pools coated with chlorinated rubber finishes, ensure you reapply when the surface starts to lose its sheen.

4. Avoid Draining During Peak Heat
Draining your pool during hot weather can cause paint to dry out, crack, or even delaminate if exposed to direct sunlight for long periods.
If maintenance or repairs require emptying the pool, plan for early mornings or cooler days to reduce paint stress.
5. Schedule a Mid-Season Check-Up
Every few weeks, inspect your pool for early signs of wear — such as fading near the waterline, rough patches, or chalky residue. Catching small issues early prevents the need for a full repaint later on.
If your pool’s surface still looks great but needs a refresh, a gentle clean and pH adjustment are usually all that’s required.
Keep Your Pool Beautiful All Summer Long
Regular maintenance not only keeps your water inviting but also protects your investment in high-quality paint. With the right care, a Luxapool® paint can stay vibrant and strong for years — even under the harshest summer sun.
