Step-by-Step Guide to Repairing Pool Cracks Before Painting
Share
Why Repairing Pool Cracks Matters
Before you even think about painting, cracks and defects in your pool shell must be properly repaired. If ignored, even the smallest cracks can let water seep in, weaken the structure, and cause your fresh coat of paint to peel or fail far sooner than expected. Proper repairs ensure your pool paint — whether epoxy or chlorinated rubber — adheres correctly and lasts for years.
Step 1: Drain and Inspect Your Pool
Start by fully draining the pool and giving it a thorough inspection. Look closely at the shell for visible cracks, chips, or hollow spots. Tap along the walls — a hollow sound can indicate delamination or areas that need patching.
Step 2: Clean the Area Around the Crack
Preparation is everything. Remove dirt, algae, and loose debris from around the crack. A stiff brush and pressure washer can help clear the area. Make sure the surface is dry before moving on.
Step 3: Widen and Undercut the Crack
Using a grinder or chisel, widen the crack slightly into a “V” shape. This helps remove weak edges and creates more surface area for the repair compound to bond. Always wear protective gear during this step.
Step 4: Apply Pool Repair Filler or Epoxy Mortar
Now it’s time to fill. Use a high-quality pool repair compound designed specifically for concrete and marblesheen surfaces.
We recommend using one of the following products:
- Luxapool® Patch & Anchor – a polymer-modified cement repair mortar ideal for filling cracks, hollows, and small defects in concrete pools.
- Luxapool® SEF (Surface Epoxy Filler) – for fine surface imperfections or areas requiring a smooth epoxy-based finish before painting.
For best results:
- Mix the filler or epoxy mortar according to the product instructions.
- Pack it firmly into the crack, pressing deep to eliminate voids.
- Smooth the surface flush with the pool shell.
Allow the repair to cure completely before moving on — rushing this step can cause future cracking or delamination.
Step 5: Sand and Smooth the Repaired Area
Once cured, sand down the repair until smooth and level with the surrounding surface. Any unevenness will show through once the pool is painted, so take your time here.
Step 6: Prime if Necessary
Depending on the repair material and the type of finish you plan to use, you may need a primer. Check the product instructions carefully, and if you’re painting with epoxy, ensure you’re using the recommended epoxy primer for maximum adhesion.
Step 7: Paint with Confidence
With the cracks sealed, the surface smoothed, and the prep complete, you’re ready to repaint. Both epoxy and chlorinated rubber paints will deliver a strong, durable finish — provided the surface is properly repaired.
