Pre-Summer Checklist: Is Your Pool Paint Ready for the Season?

Pre-Summer Checklist: Is Your Pool Paint Ready for the Season?

Get Your Pool Ready for the Summer Rush

As the weather warms up and summer approaches, there’s no better time to get your pool back in shape. A little preparation now can save you from costly repairs — and ensure your pool looks flawless all season long.

Whether you’ve recently painted your pool or are maintaining an existing finish, this pre-summer checklist will help you keep your Luxapool® coating looking its best under the Aussie sun.

1. Inspect for Fading, Cracks, or Peeling

Start with a visual inspection. Look for signs of fading, chalking, or peeling paint. These are indicators that your surface may be reaching the end of its lifespan or that it’s time for a maintenance touch-up.

If your pool is coated with epoxy, fading or discolouration after several years is normal due to UV exposure. Learn more about long-term protection and finishes on the Epoxy Pool Paint Page.

For older pools with rubber-based coatings, ensure you’re maintaining compatibility by using the right product for touch-ups or recoats. You can find details on the Chlorinated Rubber Pool Paint Page.

2. Clean and Remove Surface Build-Up

Algae, dirt, and calcium deposits can dull your paint’s appearance and shorten its lifespan.
Before the swimming season begins, give your pool a deep clean. Brush the walls and floor, paying attention to shaded or low-circulation areas where algae tend to grow.

If needed, gently use a non-abrasive pool cleaner to remove stubborn build-up — just make sure it’s suitable for painted surfaces.

3. Balance Water Chemistry Before Refilling

If you’ve recently drained your pool for cleaning or repainting, balancing your water chemistry before swimming is essential.
Start by checking pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels, and adjust gradually. Balanced water protects your paint and ensures swimmers’ comfort.

A balanced pool also helps your finish resist chalking, fading, and staining through the hotter months.

4. Repair Minor Surface Damage Early

Small chips or cracks may seem harmless now, but once water and heat come into play, they can quickly worsen.
Before summer begins, repair any damage using compatible sealants or fillers to keep your coating intact and watertight.

You can find everything you need for pre-season touch-ups in our Accessories Collection.

5. Double-Check Equipment and Surroundings

Inspect your pool’s filtration system, skimmers, and pumps to ensure they’re running efficiently. Poor circulation or malfunctioning equipment can lead to staining and uneven wear on painted surfaces.

Also, check your poolside paving or coping — light cleaning and sealing will help reduce heat absorption and complement your pool’s refreshed look.

6. Recoat If Needed

If your pool paint is more than 5–10 years old (depending on type), this might be the perfect time to recoat. A fresh coat not only restores colour but also renews the protective barrier that keeps your pool surface looking great.

Plan your repainting early in the season when temperatures are moderate for best results.
