Why Curing Time Matters More Than You Think

When you’ve just finished painting your pool, it’s tempting to refill it straight away. Rushing this one step is the fastest way to undo weeks of work.

Proper curing gives you maximum durability, chemical resistance and the deep, even gloss Luxapool® is known for. Fill too early and you risk cloudy, uneven colour that can’t be fixed without repainting.

Curing Is Not Drying

Curing is the chemical process where the coating hardens and bonds completely to the pool surface. Paint may feel dry to the touch within hours, but the full cure takes considerably longer. During that time solvents and moisture evaporate while the coating cross-links, forming the watertight barrier that resists pool chemicals and UV.

How Long Before You Can Fill the Pool

Colormaker’s guidance is the same for both Luxapool® systems, and it is not optional:

• At least 10 days in summer
• At least 14 days in winter

Longer is always better. The longer a pool dries before filling, the better the ultimate coating quality and longevity.

If a coating is filled prematurely, the damage shows as cloudy, uneven or mottled colour distribution across the final coat. It is permanent.

Once filled, do not add any chemicals other than salt or chlorine for a further 3–5 days. Fresh water won’t turn green in that window.

Time Between Coats Is Different

Don’t confuse the fill window with recoat timing. Between coats, allow a minimum of 20 hours and no more than 24, with the surface completely dry.

If more than 24 hours passes between coats, you must abrade the entire pool surface to a dull finish and remove all sanding dust before the next coat goes on. Skipping that step costs you adhesion.

What Affects Curing

• Temperature — apply epoxy between 10 and 30°C, and make sure it stays in that range for the 3 to 6 hours after application. Chlorinated rubber is narrower at 15–25°C. Cooler weather slows curing; excessive heat causes the surface to skin before the base cures.
• Humidity — high humidity traps moisture and affects adhesion and gloss. Aim for around 50%.
• Airflow — gentle air movement helps solvents evaporate evenly.
• Direct sunlight — never paint in direct sun. Shade-cloth over the pool during the whole process is worth the effort.
• Rain — defer painting if rain is forecast. Milky bloom from rain or dew must be sanded off with 40–60 grit before recoating.

Four Things That Protect Your Finish

1. Plan around the weather. Avoid painting before rain or extreme heat.
2. Wait the full period. Dry to touch is not cured.
3. Balance your water. Once filled, maintain correct pH and chlorine to protect the new coating.
4. Stay off the surface during curing to avoid marking or scuffing.

Get the Timing Right and It’ll Last

A properly cured Luxapool® epoxy finish gives you seven to eight years before you think about it again. Two extra weeks of patience at the start is a small price for that.
